Winter Whoa's

  • Blanket For protection - please make sure your horse's winter blankets are at least (300 grams) weight, water proof and wind resistant. When a horse wears a blanket his natural defense of warming his body is eliminated. In nature the horses hair grows long and traps air to help in insulating the body. Your horse's Hair is flattened while wearing blankets - rendering the natural warming defenses useless. We recommend using a layering system in the winter of (2) or more blankets.
  • Horse Shoes (shoes build up with ice & snow) - If you plan on riding outdoors in the winter. Consider having the farrier put a bubble pad under the horse shoes to eliminate build-up of ice & snow. Another option would be to let your horse go barefoot for the winter.
  • Body Clipping- If you plan on riding and showing regularly during the winter months......Consider body, trace or partial clipping of your horses hair coat. This will allow your horse to cool down and dry at a quicker rate.
